Sometimes our biggest prayers become so familiar that we forget they were once miracles.
There was a time when I prayed for peace.
Not perfection.
Not wealth.
Not a life free from challenges.
Just peace.
As a single mum raising three children, there were seasons when every day felt like a race against the clock. Between work, childcare, finances, school runs and trying to keep our home together, life often felt like one long list of responsibilities. I wasn’t dreaming about thriving. I was simply praying to make it through another week.
Today, life isn’t perfect.
There are still deadlines, laundry piles, unexpected expenses and moments that stretch me.
But recently, I realised something that stopped me in my tracks.
The life I once prayed for has quietly become my everyday life.
Survival Has a Different Perspective
When you’re living in survival mode, your prayers become very simple.
You pray for enough money to cover the essentials.
You pray for your children to be healthy.
You pray for a stable job.
You pray for strength to keep showing up.
You pray for one peaceful evening where your mind can finally rest.
You don’t think much further than tomorrow because tomorrow already feels overwhelming.
Looking back now, I realise survival changes your perspective. You become so focused on getting through today that you rarely imagine what life might look like when things become a little steadier.
The Quiet Answers to Prayer
The biggest prayers in my life weren’t answered all at once.
They arrived quietly.
One ordinary decision at a time.
It looked like replacing old furniture, not because I wanted a picture-perfect home, but because I wanted to create an environment that felt calm, welcoming and safe. A home where my children could develop a secure attachment, knowing this was their place of peace.
It looked like choosing environmentally friendly furniture and investing in cookware that supports the lifestyle I’m trying to build. Cooking healthy meals no longer feels like another task to survive. Good-quality pans, glass storage containers and simple kitchen tools have become symbols of the life we’re intentionally creating together.
It even looks like smiling every time my Wi-Fi kettle boils before I walk downstairs or using my electric salt and pepper grinders while preparing dinner. They may seem like small luxuries, but to me they represent something much bigger.
They represent stability.
Years ago, those purchases would have felt unnecessary.
Today, they remind me that survival is no longer making every decision for me.
A New Chapter in My Career
The same has happened professionally.
For years, work was about paying the bills and providing for my family.
Today, I find myself in a role where my ideas are influencing senior leaders. I’ve grown into a career that stretches me, challenges me and allows me to make a meaningful impact. Alongside that, I’ve started building my own business, something that once felt like a distant dream.
My career is no longer just about surviving.
It’s becoming part of the legacy I’m building for my children.
That didn’t happen overnight.
It happened quietly.
One opportunity.
One lesson.
One act of courage at a time.
Learning to Enjoy My Own Company
Something else has changed too.
Recently, I’ve started accepting invitations to birthday celebrations and events on my own.
Not because I was hoping to meet someone.
Not because I didn’t have anyone to go with.
But because I genuinely wanted to enjoy the experience.
For years, many of my decisions revolved around responsibility.
Now, I’m learning that spending time with myself is just as valuable.
I’ve laughed with strangers, had meaningful conversations, observed people, and driven home feeling completely content.
That kind of peace is difficult to explain.
It isn’t loud.
It’s quiet confidence.
We Adapt Faster Than We Realise
As human beings, we adapt remarkably quickly.
Yesterday’s answered prayer often becomes today’s normal.
The promotion you once dreamed about becomes another Monday morning.
The peaceful home you longed for becomes the place you rush around cleaning.
The healthy children you prayed over become noisy little humans running through the house.
The financial breathing space you hoped for becomes your new baseline.
Sometimes we become so familiar with our blessings that we stop recognising them as blessings at all.
Gratitude isn’t just about saying thank you.
It’s about remembering.
Remembering where you started.
Remembering who you used to be.
Remembering the prayers that carried you through your hardest seasons.
Maybe This Is What Thriving Really Looks Like
For a long time, I thought thriving would arrive with fireworks.
I imagined it would feel obvious.
Instead, it arrived quietly.
It looked like furniture that made our house feel like home.
It looked like cookware that encouraged healthier habits.
It looked like creating a safe environment where my children could simply be children.
It looked like meaningful work.
It looked like building a business.
It looked like enjoying my own company.
It looked like noticing that life no longer feels like a constant emergency.
None of those moments made headlines.
Together, they changed my life.
I’ve realised that the things I once saw as luxuries were never really about the things themselves.
They were evidence that survival was slowly loosening its grip on my life.
Final Thoughts
There are still prayers I’m waiting to see answered.
There are still dreams I’m working towards.
There are still difficult days.
But I’ve realised something recently.
I spent so many years praying for a better season that I almost missed the fact that I’m already living in one.
Perhaps that’s why gratitude matters so much.
Because if we don’t stop to notice today’s answered prayers, we’ll spend tomorrow chasing new ones without recognising how far we’ve already come.
Thriving isn’t the absence of challenges.
Sometimes it’s simply having enough peace to notice that life no longer feels like survival.
And perhaps the greatest miracle isn’t that life became perfect.
It’s that one ordinary day, I looked around and realised…
I’m living parts of the life I once prayed for.
Reflection
Take a quiet moment to reflect:
- What ordinary part of your life today was once something you prayed for?
- Have you been so focused on what’s next that you’ve forgotten how far you’ve already come?
- What small, everyday moments remind you that you’re no longer simply surviving?
